Akua

Akua is a Ghanaian-American techno DJ who came up in New York, playing late-night and early-morning sets at clubs such as Basement and Nowadays, before moving to Berlin. An associate of the Discwoman collective, she digs into the history of the genre and brings its old-school values to modern dancefloors, from the raw, rebellious spirit of Underground Resistance to the fast machine funk of Detroit, Chicago and New York in the nineties. Playing fast, she has said, is cathartic. Her Dekmantel Podcast opened with K-Hand's Global Warning from 1994 and raced through decades of hammering kicks, rave synths and bouncing bass lines. She has played Movement Detroit, Berghain, FUSE Brussels, Draaimolen, FOLD and Dekmantel Ten.
