D.A.F.

Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft formed in Düsseldorf in 1978 and from 1981 was the duo of singer Gabi Delgado-López and drummer and electronics player Robert Görl. Rejecting American pop and rock, they sang only in German over robotic sequences from a Korg MS-20 and an ARP Odyssey, joining high technique with body power. The album Alles ist gut, produced by Conny Plank for Virgin in 1981, sold hundreds of thousands of copies in Germany, and with Gold und Liebe and Für immer it laid the groundwork for EBM and industrial dance music; John Peel called them the grandfathers of techno. The pair reunited in 1985 and in 2003 for Fünfzehn neue D.A.F.-Lieder. Delgado-López died in March 2020, and Görl released the final album Nur Noch Einer in 2021.
