Freedom Engine

Freedom Engine is the alias Mathew Jonson built for the music that would not fit his dancefloor records. After years of gigging, the Berlin-based producer took formal piano lessons and gave himself licence to write whatever came: celestial ambient, icy out-of-time electro, experimental rhythm and synth-pop. The album A Box Full Of Magic for Dekmantel gathers that work across eleven tracks made on a Prophet 5, a CS-60 and a VCS3, sequenced like a DJ mix for flow rather than by chronology. Live, Freedom Engine is closer to a band than a laptop set, with Jonson playing piano and synthesizers and singing. His related Mr & Mrs Jonson project with Isis Kuaygarond runs through Wagon Repair.
