Function

Function is David Sumner, born in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and raised on Kraftwerk, Afrika Bambaataa, New Order and Depeche Mode. He released his first record in 1996 on Synewave, joined Regis's Sandwell District collective in 2004 and became the only non-Birmingham artist on Downwards. His albums include Incubation in 2013 and Existenz in 2019, and with Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell he formed LSD. With Nastia Reigel he found a shared love of early, rave-leaning and transcendental grooves; after months swapping records the pair went into the studio and released the Devocion EP on Dekmantel, four tracks of broody, melancholic techno with shadowy atmosphere and deep rolling rhythms. Their Dekmantel Mix 511 extends that world with Donato Dozzy and Regis alongside two tracks from the EP.
