Bristol producer Liam McLean, born in 1989, emerged in the late 2000s as the name most associated with purple sound, the vivid, synth-led strand of dubstep and grime he shaped alongside Gemmy and Guido. Early records landed on Earwax, Terrorhythm, Tectonic and Hyperdub, while his own Kapsize label became the main outlet for his music, from Purple City with Ginz onwards. His debut album The Vision came out on 4AD in 2011, featuring Jessie Ware and Freddie Gibbs, and The Mainframe followed on Kapsize in 2015. He has since become an in-demand audio engineer, mixing Swindle's album No More Normal and mastering music for Stormzy and Hudson Mohawke, and in 2024 he put out new solo singles on Kapsize.
