Loraine James

Loraine James grew up in Enfield, North London, took piano lessons as a child and learned production at college and on the Commercial Music course at Westminster University, though her method owes more to DIY culture than to training. Her tracks apply IDM glitch aesthetics with an improvisational, jazz-rooted instinct, folding grime, R&B, jazz and ambient into intricate pieces made on a minimal, easily available setup. After the self-released debut album Detail in 2017, the album For You And I on Hyperdub in 2019 brought wide acclaim. Her second Hyperdub release, the Nothing EP, brought in collaborators such as Lila Tirando a Violeta, Jonnine Standish of HTRK and the rapper Tardast. Her openly queer perspective runs through music that is both abrasive and vulnerable.
