Machine Woman

Russian-born Anastasia Vtorova makes music that is autobiographical in style and in name. Machine Woman's track titles reference things like her favourite bouncers (Camile From OHM Makes Me Feel Loved) and her least favourite genres (I Want to Fuck Tech House). The beats bear the hallmarks of the chapters of her life, from the industrial she first heard growing up in a post-Soviet environment to the late-night eeriness of Salford, where she lived before moving among the minimal rhythms of Berlin. Her glitchy, mechanical abstractions for toucan sounds with Derek Muro carry that through. Her sets feel like a walk through a desolate network of abandoned warehouses: spacious after-dark electronics, moody ambient and shadowy dub techno, with the occasional ray of light or hallucinatory synth pulling you deeper.
