Moktar

Moktar is an Egyptian-Australian DJ and producer who grew up in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, the son of an Egyptian conductor and composer of Arabic and folk music, and started DJing in high school. Now based in Melbourne, he folds traditional Arabic instrumentation and percussion into broken techno, house and electro, sampling and playing to foreground his heritage. He debuted on Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs with an EP whose track Silk became the most-played record on community radio in his hometown, and followed it with the Immigrant EP, a reflection on upbringing and diaspora. His DJ sets run at high velocity while his productions turn moody and introspective. He has played Dekmantel Festival.
