Russell E.L. Butler

Russell Ellington Langston Butler is a Black artist from Bermuda whose work spans vinyl records, digital releases, live audiovisual performance and archiving projects, driven by themes of process, technology, the archive and confrontation. Long based in Oakland before settling in New York, Butler makes stripped-back, propulsive techno on modular machines, music that is both defiant and open to all. Releases have come on Opal Tapes, Left Hand Path, Spectral Sound and Mister Saturday Night, with their 2018 album for Left Hand Path a high point. As a DJ they range wider, through dystopian atmospheres, EBM, cold wave and mechanical house, as heard on their RA and Dekmantel podcasts. Butler played Lentekabinet in 2022.
