The Egyptian Lover
The Egyptian Lover is Gregory Broussard, born in South Central Los Angeles in 1963 and a key figure in the city's early electro and hip-hop scenes. He began performing in 1982 with the Uncle Jam's Army party crew and was a regular at the Radio club, appearing in the documentary Breakin' 'n' Enterin'. In 1984 he founded Egyptian Empire Records and released his debut album On the Nile, which carried Egypt, Egypt, a defining West Coast electro track built on the Roland TR-808. One Track Mind and Filthy followed. Stones Throw later reissued his work, including the four-LP box set 1983-1988. He still performs with the 808, and draws pen-and-ink artwork on record sleeves that has been sold at Sotheby's.
