ZULI
It has always been a struggle to sum up the sound of ZULI. The Egyptian sound artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist is restlessly creative and unconventional. He can do everything from rap, IDM and footwork to hardcore jungle and experimental rhythms, mainly on Lee Gamble's UIQ label. He has done a lot for his native Cairo scene as co-founder of the Kairo is Koming (KIK) and AHOMA collectives and as former co-head of the city's alternative music venue VENT, which later became a club night and festival. He is now firmly established in the wider European scene, thanks in part to his radio show on NTS. His sets are dystopian soundtracks uniting Arab music, Chicago club, European techno and UK bass, intricate yet heavy, dense yet atmospheric.
