When you’ve been immersed in music for as long as Steffi has, naturally you’ll have a deep well of influence to draw on. Instinctively, she channels decades of absorbing and studying sounds from a multitude of sources - the cities that built the foundations, the towns, the clubs, the labels and artists that all contributed to a seemingly endless rabbit hole of inspiration. Detroit, Chicago, New York, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin, the Belgian sound, Italy… Combined with her time spent on the road, all of this, and much more, permeates into her productions subtly, subconsciously. The result is an artist that cannot be put into a box. When Steffi is making music she is a conduit for a broad field of inputs, and what comes out is an amalgamation of everything.

With her fifth solo studio album, Half An Owl And A Full Moon Rising, Steffi harnesses the energy of the dance floor for a powerful, uplifting ride into the core of what makes this culture so transformative. As a lover of percussion, this album got my head nodding immediately - at the same time, it felt the familiar tingles of euphoria throughout. From her years as a dedicated raver in the late 80s, through to her global tours, prolific production and ceaseless love for music in its many forms, Steffi’s innate understanding of the dance floor informs this new body of work. Her 2025 LP with Virginia, Patterns Of Vibration, was a key factor in the conception of this new album. The dance floor-focused project served as a reminder of the positivity and simplicity of the club experience.

Key to all of this is the joy of the club experience: the high energy and the vibrational field that’s created when the DJ, their musical selections and the dancers align on the same wavelength. The “Feel Factor” as she calls it. Frequency, resonance, rhythmic entrainment - the science of dance floor harmonics. As you and I know, music can tap into a very primal part of us and elicit spiritual experiences. Transcendence, a natural high - ecstasy. "That is the f***ing ecstasy - you're going home and you're like, ‘God, I've been places’,” Steffi says. This is her intention, with every set, with every in-the-moment decision made while playing, the music she curates and plays - and the music she’s created for this album. It will take you places, no doubt.

The mind expanding, heart opening feelings of ecstasy we can experience on the dance floor are central to this album - even the title is a reference: Half an owl meaning half a pill. But beyond the use of substances, it’s about the ecstatic response that can be facilitated by DJs and their music, whether that’s natural or chemical.

“Everything is about taking people on a journey. I’m not changing my approach to entertain people with a short attention span. No. This is my version. Welcome to my world,” Steffi says. “This is how I translate ecstasy visually and for body, mind, and soul.”

Going back to the raves that started all of this, the core components remain the same: connection, unity, harmony, social cohesion and the feelings of love, happiness, empathy and belonging that are stimulated by the shared experience of gathering and dancing to the same beats. “This is what the world needs - colour in every sense, unity, musical diversity," Steffi says. In times of divisive messaging and social disharmony, club spaces are becoming more and more sacred, and essential.

In essence, Half An Owl And A Full Moon Rising, is the product of these two foundational through lines - Steffi’s extensive expertise combined with the eternally present power of the dance floor. It’s sonic storytelling, carrying the vibes and euphoria of years gone by into today’s culture, offering new generations the opportunity to experience the same transformative feelings that Steffi had when she was immersed in the dance floor as a raver herself over 35 years ago. Yes, the world has changed and technology has advanced, impacting behaviour and culture, but the heart of the human experience is still very much rooted in connecting and the healing, affirming power of togetherness. By telling that story, a story as old as humanity itself, Steffi is reminding us of our true nature - stirring an inner remembering.

Each track is imbued with pure, unfiltered club energy. Steffi’s approach with her albums is to start from scratch, working up and out from a core idea rather than compiling music from an existing collection. Through this process, each long-form release is formed as a cohesive, original concept fueled by her vision. Half An Owl And A Full Moon Rising is comprised of nine cuts, whittled down from over 40. Unusually for Steffi, she shared some of the music with trusted friends before the album was completed - a first for her, and indicative of her growth as an artist. Allowing herself to be vulnerable, and open to opinion, fed back into the development of the LP.

Opening with ‘The Rolling Wave’, the album immediately transports the listener into a world of emotionally and physically moving soundscapes. Across all nine tracks Steffi weaves together potent drum programming with ethereal pads, strings, heartrending melodies and straight up grooves - honest, no fluff productions that are designed for a very specific purpose. Listening to cuts like ‘Sweeping Leaps’, you can hear echoes of the huge variety of house and techno Steffi has absorbed. Each track works individually and as part of the broader album journey. The title track wraps you up in its scintillating rhythms and heady strings, while, midway through, ‘Acoustics Of Space’ fires on all cylinders with its dynamic tempo, relentless drums and euphoric pad work.

At the age of 52, Steffi is all out of fucks to give, though I don’t think she had that many anyway. Rebellious, forthright, candid and open, she’s an artist who knows what she wants to achieve and has the skills, knowledge and experience to make it a reality. Half An Owl And A Full Moon Rising sounds like an effortless, yet heartfelt and passionate, statement to the world. As life on Earth gets increasingly difficult, troubling and divisive, what’s the antidote? Joy, ecstasy, bonding, understanding, acceptance and love. The dance floor can be a sacred space for generating all of this and more.

With her new album I see Steffi fully owning her role as a storyteller who facilitates cohesion across sound, race, ethnicity, age and class. Music and gathering to dance are still incredibly powerful tools for social change, whether the ravers are aware of it or not. By making it her sincere intention to honour the energy of rave culture with this album, Steffi reinforces the notion of the dance floor as a critical driver of individual and social transformation.
