KMRU

Experimental sound artist KMRU is a master of quietness. His music is as much about empty space as the delicate field recordings that fill it. The Kenyan artist has perfected this balancing act from his base in Berlin, most notably on the 2020 full-length Peel, a record of slowly unfolding synth beauty and drawn-out drone mindfulness. Soft-focus chords bleed into one another like shades of watercolour, and the environmental nature of the sound sources lends it a natural atmosphere. His mixes are painterly and unhurried but always going somewhere, carried by a gentle underlying rhythm, an expansive synth arc or a hiss of static, at times like a recording from the far reaches of the cosmos, at others like the sound drifting through a Berlin window on a sunny afternoon.
